Tooth Whitening

Tooth whitening is used to brighten the natural color of the tooth enamel, and it is an easy, non-invasive way to improve the appearance and of your smile. There are several different ways that patients can whiten their teeth. Home tooth whitening systems are the most popular method, and they can give patients dramatic results. However, before beginning a tooth whitening regimen, it’s important to determine if any fillings, crowns or other restorations need to be replaced, as tooth whitening only works on the natural tooth enamel. In our office, replacements will be done after the bleaching, so your new fillings will match the new color of your teeth. At Cottonwood Dental we offer zoom whitening and custom take-home whitening trays to help you accomplish your teeth whitening goals. We also offer a combination of zoom whitening and custom whitening trays.

Touch ups every several years are necessary to keep your teeth looking white. People who smoke or drink coffee, tea or wine will need touch ups more frequently.

Reasons for tooth whitening:

  • Fluorosis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development)
  • Normal wear of outer tooth layer
  • Stained teeth (due to medication, or certain foods and drink)

Providing you with the right home tooth whitening system takes two visits. The first visit is used to take impressions of your teeth in order to create your clear, plastic whitening trays. At your next appointment, we’ll check to see that the trays fit properly and then make any necessary adjustments. You’ll wear these trays either twice a day for 30 minutes or overnight for a couple of weeks. The length of the treatment depends largely on how white you want your teeth to get and what the current level of staining on your teeth is. After your whitening treatment, it is typical for your teeth to be more sensitive than normal, but this sensation will subside. In addition to the trays and solution, you will also receive care instructions to help ensure your smile stays healthy and white.

There are many methods Dr. Giaquinto uses to whiten your teeth. Typically this involves high concentrations of either Hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. Our whitening regimen includes the Luma light which is an intense light that’s focused on your teeth to activate the bleaching process.

Disclaimer: Don’t use household bleach/hydrogen peroxide on your teeth.

The teeth whitening process takes between one and two hours, and teeth may whiten anywhere from two to eight shades. In office methods are considered to be some of the fastest, most effective and safest methods available.

Dr. Giaquinto takes an impression of your mouth and fabricates custom fitted whitening trays for you to take home. At home, you dispense teeth whitening gel into the trays and wear them for a few hours a day or night for a period of time.

Over-the-counter teeth whitening products have become very popular in recent years and can be found just about anywhere. These whitening strips can (in many cases) produce whiter teeth. The downside is they don’t produce same quality of results you would see with in-office treatments and whitening trays due to lower concentrations of the hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide.

These thin, flexible strips, coated with a whitening gel, are placed over your teeth. How long the whitening lasts depends on your teeth and how often you drink beverages like coffee or wine or if you smoke. One of the more effective whitening strips include Crest 3D White, 2 Hour Express Whitestrips, etc.

With this method, a whitening solutions is applied to the teeth via a one-size-fits-all tray. The accuracy of the fit is not as comfortable or effective as custom fabricated whitening trays. Gum irritation from average fitting trays is one of the downsides for this technique.

As a rule, Dr. Giaquinto has not found whitening tooth pastes to be effective. What we have seen is an increase in tooth sensitivity caused by the whitening gel found in these products.

Botox & Derma-Fill

What is Botox?

Every day it seems a new condition can be treated with this protein. Botox is currently the number one cosmetic treatment in the United States. It stops your body from making wrinkles by hindering the movement that causes them in the first place.

Botox is a trade name for botulinum toxin, which comes in the form of a purified protein. The mechanism of action for Botox is really quite simple. Botox is a muscle relaxer. When the muscle does not contract, the dynamic motion that causes wrinkles in the skin will stop. The skin then starts to smooth out, and in approximately three to ten days after treatment, the skin above those muscles becomes nice and smooth. The effects of Botox last for approximately three to four months, at which time the patient will need to repeat the treatment.

Botox has also been used for important clinical uses for patients with chronic TMJ and facial pain. Botox is also used to complement esthetic dentistry cases, as a minimally invasive alternative to surgically treating high lip line cases, denture patients who have trouble adjusting to new dentures, lip augmentation, and has uses in orthodontic cases where retraining of the facial muscles is necessary.

What are Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers will volumize wrinkles, creases, and folds around the face in areas that have lost fat and collagen as we age. After age 30, we all lose approximately 1% of hyaluronic acid from our bodies. Hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm can be injected right underneath these folds to replace the volume lost which creates a younger appearance in the face. Dermal fillers can be used to complete cosmetic dentistry cases by creating a beautiful, young-looking frame around the teeth. The effect of dermal fillers typically last anywhere from 6 to 12 months at which point the procedure needs to be repeated.

Both Botox and dermal fillers are procedures that take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes.
